Install Wireshark

Context / Scenario

Wireshark is a protocol analyzer software tool, sometimes known as a "packet sniffer," that is used for network troubleshooting, analysis, software and protocol development, and teaching. As data streams traverse the network, the sniffer "captures" each protocol data unit (PDU) and is able to decode and analyse its content in accordance with the relevant RFC or other standard.

Wireshark is an essential tool for anybody who works with networks and may be used in conjunction with the majority of the labs in the CCNA courses for data analysis and troubleshooting. This experiment demonstrates how to download and install Wireshark.

1 personal computer (Windows with internet access)

Instructor Note: Using a packet sniffer such as Wireshark may be seen as a violation of the school's security policy. Permission should be sought prior to running Wireshark for this lab. If the teacher has reservations about utilising a packet sniffer such as Wireshark, he or she may opt to assign the lab as homework or provide a walk-through session.

Instructions

Wireshark has evolved into the de facto industry standard packet sniffer for network engineers. This free programme is compatible with a wide variety of operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. You will download and install the Wireshark software application on your computer in this lab.

Note: Before installing Wireshark, consult your teacher about your academy's software download policy.

Step 1: Download and install Wireshark.

a. Wireshark is available for download at www.wireshark.org.

a. Select the appropriate software version for your PC's architecture and operating system. For instance, if you have a 64-bit Windows computer, choose Windows Installer (64-bit).

Following your selection, the download should begin. The download location is determined by the browser and operating system you are using. The Downloads folder is the default destination for Windows users.

Install Wireshark in Step 2. a. Wireshark-win64-x.x.x.exe is the downloaded file, where x indicates the version number if you downloaded the 64bit version. To begin the installation procedure, double-click the file.

React to any security warnings that appear on your screen. If you already have a version of Wireshark installed on your computer, you will be requested to remove it before installing the new version. It is suggested that you uninstall the previous version of Wireshark before installing the new one. To remove the previous version of Wireshark, click Yes.

a. If this is the first time you're installing Wireshark, or if you've finished the uninstall procedure, you'll be sent to the Wireshark Setup wizard. Then click Next.

c. Proceed with the installation procedure. When the License Agreement box appears, click I Agree.

d. Leave the Choose Components window's default settings alone and click Next.

e. Click Next after selecting your preferred shortcut settings.

f. You may alter the Wireshark installation directory, but unless you have a restricted amount of disc space, it is suggested that you leave it alone. To proceed, click Next.

h. Npcap must be installed on your PC in order to collect live network data. If you already have Npcap installed on your computer, the Install check box will be cleared. If the version of Npcap installed is older than the version included with Wireshark, it is advised that you tick the Install Npcap x.x.x (version number) check box. To proceed, click Next.

h. DO NOT install USBPcap for the purpose of capturing regular traffic. Selecting the checkbox to install USBPcap is NOT recommended. USBPcap is an experimental programme that may cause USB difficulties on your computer. To proceed, click Install.

i. Wireshark begins installing its files and reports the installation status.

j. Accept the licencing agreement in the Npcap Setup Wizard in a separate window if installing Npcap. To proceed, click I Agree. To install Npcap, click Install. To complete the Npcap installation, click Next; to end the Npcap installation, click Finish.

k. When the Wireshark installation is complete, click Next.

l. Click Finish to finish the installation of Wireshark. If required, restart the computer.
